netViz Corporation Announces Release of New Version of its Network-Documentation Software

Data-visualization toolset includes graph layout algorithms

December 15, 2000, Gaithersburg, MD - netViz Corporation has unveiled a new version of its flagship product, netViz Professional 5.0. A leading network-diagramming and data-visualization tool, netViz uses data-embedded graphics to make hierarchical diagrams that integrate graphics, data, and relationship information throughout a complex system.

With the new release, netViz introduces graph layout, a powerful new feature that repositions linked objects to graphically clarify object relationships. A concept that originates in theoretical mathematics, graph layout is a great way for users to easily understand relationships among screen objects. netViz 5.0 contains six different algorithms, including hierarchical, orthogonal and spring, that can be applied to large groups of objects. Users have full control over the look of layouts and the number of screen objects affected by the layout algorithm. An essential tool for understanding how interconnected objects are related, graph layout functionality could until now only be obtained in expensive, niche software.

netViz 5.0 contains many other powerful information-management features including data-query capabilities, a unique drag-and-drop interface to widely-used databases, and the ability to publish data-embedded diagrams over the Web. By simply linking existing enterprise databases to netViz graphical objects, users can see and graphically manage large amounts of complex information. In addition to graph layout, netViz 5.0 also ships with over 7,000 graphics, including thousands of vendor-specific network components, as well as a host of new features that allow users to hide sensitive enterprise data, drag objects from one hierarchical level of a project to another, auto-schedule refreshes from external databases and gain more control over the look and feel of data-embedded diagrams.

Unlike simple diagramming tools, netViz stores information about objects and their relationships throughout a complex system and then displays that information graphically. The end result is a seamless integration between data and graphics, according to netViz President Vo Tran. "We've worked very hard to develop netViz's ability to present complex data in an intuitive, graphical format. Enterprises have tremendous amounts of data, but can't solve real-world problems without an easy way to get access to it. We believe that netViz 5.0 provides that access in a powerful and elegant way."

"The flexibility of our tool is probably its strongest asset. We allow easy drag-and-drop linking from any ODBC-compliant database to our graphics. That means our users can incorporate their existing enterprise data not only from Excel, but also from popular database packages like Access, Oracle and Sybase. This allows netViz to act as a graphical repository for collections of all types of enterprise data, such as network management information, asset management data, personnel, accounting and help desk records, and more."

"Because of its database linking capabilities and Data-Driven Graphics, we see our engine as something that could help any enterprise that deals with complex, interconnected data," said Tran. "Our goal has been to come as close as possible to merging drawings and data into what could be called a "visual database" and I'm pleased with what we've achieved."
