netViz Corporation to Institute Hosting Service for Web-Published netViz Projects

Service to be offered free during Beta testing period

January 12, 2001, Gaithersburg, MD - netViz Corporation this week unveiled netViz webView, a Web-hosting service for easy publishing of data-enriched netViz diagrams. The service will allow users with netViz projects to publish them to the Web with a single click from the netViz desktop.

The hosting service serves a real business need, says netViz President and CEO Vo Tran. "With a traditional drawing tool, it may suffice to distribute drawings by e-mail. But a typical netViz project contains hundreds of related diagrams and inter-diagram links, as well as a database containing information about the objects and their relationships to one another. Our Web-server software doesn't just publish the diagram graphics; it also makes the entire project database accessible over the Web. In our case, it's a lot easier to just upload the entire project to a secure Website and provide access to colleagues, customers or vendors. Our read-only Web interface is accessible through a browser with no additional software required. Anyone with access to a project's url can see netViz diagrams, navigate hierarchies and examine detailed information about every object and link."

"We already sell Web-server software that lets users publish netViz diagrams and data," said Tran, "but we've found that a lot of our users don't want to invest the time and money required to set up a server. Our new Web-hosting service will make it incredibly easy to distribute diagrams instantly across the building or around the globe."

The new service will incorporate the concept of secure viewer groups. webView users will be able to designate individuals to be included in one or more viewer groups, each with its own password. When a project is uploaded and published, the host server will send an e-mail to each member of the viewer group with a link to the project on the Web. Recipients of the e-mail need only click on the link and enter the viewer group password to see the published project.

Said Tran, "We're excited about webView, but it's just the first step in our Web strategy, and we've got a lot of great enhancements in the works. In the long term, we'll have an all-purpose Web-based business-diagramming solution that combines graphics, data, and a variety of collaboration tools. In the meantime, webView provides a great way for netViz users to distribute their netViz projects without having to go through the pain of setting buying and configuring a Web server. Our goal is to let our users create and distribute data-embedded business diagrams; the less time they're forced to spend on hardware and software configuration, the better. webView will let our customers focus on their business instead of on how to get a server up and running."
